Eight years ago my girlfriend and a college class which I was enlisted hooked me on Geocaching. For two years I immersed myself in the community. I always liked GPS, but didn't know how to incorporate this into my curriculum.
Today's class had lots of great ideas. The sites which were posted gave good information including specific lesson plans which I could use as is or modify to my lesson. I liked the story mapping with Arc, Cmap resources and map bingo.
My take away for ideas in today's class: Instead of my usual 4 corners for an icebreaker in the first week of school, I'm going to have students post the location of their summer vacation and write a description of what they did. Using the website GPS.gov Space Segment contains the launch videos for satellite launches to show students how we put the machinery in outer space to get pictures of our planet and our own planet. For future project, I'll research the GPS coordinates for Mars to see if we can use the GPS of another planet to build colonies on that planet and how the colonies can work together and travel to and from each other.
